Being Seen
The ability to bring your full self in a manner that is not hindered by traditional art sector models (hierarchies, policies and other corporate management structures) that don’t align with values, vision of what an equity and artist centered arts sector can evolve into.
The ability to work in and from a decolonizing lens, to disrupt, evolve and create new systems of arts support and services for Artists. This work needs the ability to take risks, experiment, fail, evolve, to succeed.
Obstacles
Obstacles faced during 25+ years of experience working in the Arts Non-Profit field:
-
Lack of real, actual support and respect for BIPOC Leaders in the Art Sector
-
Top down, white-centered, paternalistic, hierarchical structures that benefit Careers, not Artists
-
Art Sector populated with workers who understand the job but don’t understand the Arts, or Artists
-
The needs of Artists may be similar but are not the same as Arts Organizations
-
One size solutions don’t fit all
-
Applying Organizational metrics to measure the success of Artists who don’t have access to the same resources
-
Presuming that Artists fail at what they do because they aren’t adopting Capitalistic business models
-
Programming choices based on outdated models and needs and not based on future impacts
-
Wasting time, focus and work with faux “emergencies and urgencies”
-
Performative DEAI, that is more bandaid than reform
-
Despite a plethora of workshops, meetings, surveys and research; inequitable distribution of resources still persists
